Recently, the researchers have found that a special gene is associated with macular degeneration. This is actually a variant of a gene which is known as H (CFH). The deficiency of this gene has been found to affect the development of macular degeneration in a person.

There are other factors too that have been found responsible for causing macular degeneration. These are allergy to a particular drug, smoking, exposure to sunlight and dietary habits. Also, eating high cholesterol diet can lead to macular degeneration. Even high blood pressure causes this eye disease.
